Established
firms and start-ups
cultivate next wave of wireless
Ottawa’s wireless
sector includes more than 60 companies delivering world-class
quality in hardware, software, services and infrastructure
solutions. Together these firms employ more than 2,000 engineers
developing the chips, infrastructure, software, applications
and devices that will drive the next wave of wireless content
and services for businesses and consumers.
The wireless sector
encompasses technologies such as cellular voice and data,
satellite, in-building (Wi-Fi) and broadband.
A diverse base of
established and emerging companies form the core of Ottawa’s
wireless community. Global firms such as Nokia, Nortel, Alcatel,
Siemens, and Marconi are included in this group, as are a
growing number of local companies and promising start-ups.
Meanwhile, a wide range of industry, government, and academic
initiatives contribute significant impetus in research and
development.
Growth in Ottawa’s wireless industry is driven in large
part by innovations developed at the Communications Research
Centre—the premier wireless innovations lab in Canada—and
at Ottawa’s universities, where wireless education and
research are key areas of activity.
